Southern Exposure Music Society

F.A.Q., 12/14/02

1. Who are you people?
S.E.M.S. is a group of individuals devoted to sharing and experiencing different types of music. Since we’re based in Keene, NH, we have fewer chances to find out about lesser-known artists than if we lived in a larger urban sprawl. Each member takes turns choosing an album, artist, or genre that means something to them and makes CD-R copies for the other group members. Because this process takes time and energy to accomplish, I’ve decided to keep membership to 10 people or less. There just isn’t enough time in any of our schedules to be making 57 damn CD-Rs for people, n’est-ce pas?

2. Isn’t what you’re doing illegal?
Mmmmm......yes. However, although making CD copies and handing them out to people is something the RIAA froths over, I believe we’re ultimately doing a good thing. The whole purpose of this “club” is NOT to simply get free discs for your collection, it’s supposed to be a chance to find out what our neighbors are listening to, what they think is interesting. It’s a chance to broaden our musical horizons, discovering artists you never knew existed. I’m convinced that when a person gets a disc by an artist that really strikes them, they will go out and buy more from that artist. Hey, it works on me at least.

3. Nice justification, thief. But what the hell, I live in the area, count me in. I’m worried though: what if my collection isn’t obscure enough for this club of connoisseurs?
Obscurity is NOT the point. Nobody is trying to “out-indie” anybody else here (though feel free to get as weird as you want). If your turn comes around and you feel so strongly about the musical ouevre of Andrew Lloyd Webber that you MUST give us all copies of the soundtrack to his failed 80‘s rollerdisco disaster ‘Starlight Express’, then by all means do so. Don’t feel pressured to deliver a disc nobody has. We all have our various strengths, and sooner or later someone will have something that someone else has. No big deal. Also, if you decide to make a compilation disc instead of handing out a particular album, go to it. The sky’s the limit, Buttercakes.

4. Do I have to supply anything with the CD-R's?
Nope, not a thing. Jewel cases and artwork are absolutely optional. This is supposed to be fun, not drudgery.

5. Who are you exactly, how do I reach you, and what order are we going in anyway?!
Okay, take a deep breath. I think our member roster should be listed out there on the front page where you just came from. Pickups and drop-ffs will occur at Turn It Up on Main Street in Keene I believe. Here’s my info if you want to join:
