Miscellaneous Fun Links
- Bash.org: Funny quotes from IRC instant
messaging conversations. With the emphasis on nerds and tech humor.
- Engrish: As you may be aware, the
Japanese are generally very enamored of the English language. Their overall
fluency, however...mmmm, not so good. Here are some lovely examples.
- Artchive: A collection
of the more "important" painters over the centuries. It's got some nice, large scans
of their paintings.
- Japander: A
wonderful site full of the silly ads American stars make in Japan. Definitely
a must-see.
- Mainichi
Daily News WaiWai: The WaiWai section of this Japanese newspaper
is chock full of naughty, hilarious news articles collected from the
pages of Japan's most outrageous news sources. Endlessly
amusing, despite the occasional depravity.
- Catprin: A
really odd Japanese site where you can get costumes to torture and
humiliate your kitty.
- Podge
and Rodge: Ireland's funniest, most irreverant TV show starring
deranged puppets.
- Elonka's List of
Famous Unsolved Codes and Ciphers: Pretty much exactly what it says. Fascinating.
- Let's
MURAKAMI Haruking: A very good Japanese fansite including translations of author
Haruki Murakami's rare works. He's one of my favorite novelists, and his style is
pretty unique: a mixture of mystery and human emotion with his own surreal touches.
- Cycle Chaos: A wiki documenting all Japanese motorbikes.
- Cartoon Brew: A site chock
full of news and opinion about cartoons old and new.
- Golden Age of Cartoons: This
webforum is an invaluable source of information and commentary on classic 'toons.
- Funpic: Lots and lots and
LOTS of images to entertain you.
- Comic Art
Community Galleries: A vast archive of comic book artists' work.
- The Rasterbator: Take any
small image and turn it into a wall-sized poster.
Fun Blogs
- Metafilter: An ongoing
archive of articles, featuring discussion on each topic. Kind of
like Fark with a brain.
- Monkeyfilter: "MonkeyFilter
is a Metafilter clone, only with more bananas and less flinging."
- Reddit
- Damn Interesting
- Boing Boing: More interesting
links to check out.
- Sataguini: A collection
of fun links updated daily.
- Waxy
- Digg
- PopURLs: "Popular URLs to the latest
web buzz."
- Junk Food Blog: The latest
treats to hit store shelves. My idea of heaven.
- Apropos of Something: A whole bunch
of goofy stuff gets highlighted here on a daily basis. Hard to describe, easy to enjoy.
Nepotism Links: Sites by my friends and family
Video Game Links
- Slightly
Dark: I'm one of those odd folks who enjoys the music from video
games. If you enjoy it too, I urge you to join us at the Slightly
Dark chat forum. (/shameless plug)
- Rom
Hack Reviews: Actually, all of i-mockery is interesting, but this
is my favorite part. They download people's hacks of classic
8-bit Nintendo games, play them, and review them. A comedy goldmine.
- Phantasy
Star Pages: The ultimate archive of materials related to
Sega's awe-inspiring RPG series, Phantasy Star.
- Newgrounds: A
really fun site full of flash games playable online, much of it geared
toward mature players. Some funny little movies, too.
- Game
Sprite Archives: Your one-stop source for sprites (the character
artwork in video games). Not sure what I mean? Click it and find out.
- Retro Remakes: The largest
game remakes community on the internet.
- Retrogames: More emulation fun.
- Coin Op
Video Games: Lots of game sounds recorded by a guy in an arcade when he was a kid.
My Musical Interests
- Sweet Adeline: The
official Elliott Smith website. An excellent singer-songwriter (Oscar-nominated
for a tune in "Good Will Hunting").
- Ben Folds
Fansite: Half of the Folds Fans posting here are beligerent morons
but it's still a great place for info on the man and his music.
- The
Suburbs: Another Ben Folds site with music downloads and info.
- The Hellacopters: Ladies
and gentlemen I give you...the greatest Scandinavian garage-punk band in the world!
- Pitchfork Media: These
guys can be sort of "hipper-than-thou" with their album reviews, but it's still the
best place I know for indie rock news.
- Shonen
Knife: Japanese pop-punk princesses who've been rocking since the mid-1980s. Too
awesome for words!
- The Upper Crust: Like Shonen Knife, this
band is great but doesn't tour nearly enough for my liking. They're sort of like
AC/DC in 18th century powdered wigs, singing about how hard it is to be a member
of the nobility. Boston's finest.
- The La's: With their retro pop
sound and Lee Mavers' impeccable songwriting, it was almost a foregone conclusion that this
would become one of my favorite groups. How about a proper second album fellas?
- AC/DC: The greatest hard rock band
ever. 'Nuff said.
Online Comics I Dig
- My
LiveJournal "friends page": Since I mostly add comics artists to my Friends
page, there are plenty of daily comics here to check out.
- Achewood: Reading this comic
is a surreal experience at times. The characters have very unusual personalities for a
humor strip and the dialogue/storylines are sometimes so high-brow that Joe and Jane
Average "don't get it." I wouldn't blame you if you hated it, I just think it's
hilarious.
- Haiku Circus: "A comic strip
that combines drawings with haiku poetry (5-7-5 syllables)."
- Spamusement: "Poorly-drawn cartoons
inspired by actual spam subject lines."
- Perry Bible
Fellowship: This has nothing to do with bibles and everything to do with
well-drawn, funny, subversive comics.
- Alien Loves Predator: The
hilarious antics of two mismatched roommates in the big city.
- XKCD: Sketchy drawings and humor you
often need a physics degree to understand? I'm there.
- Nedroid: Anthony Clark is a genius.
- New Yorker Cartoon
Caption Contest: Look at a comic from New Yorker magazine and come up with your own
winning caption.
